The Problem:
Eau Claire County residents weren’t given a vote—or even a warning—when a secret zoning change was slipped into county code. It reclassifies massive industrial wind and solar farms as “agriculture”, making it easier than ever for developers to take over prime farmland with virtually no oversight.
The Facts:
- A secret zoning Eau Claire County amendment reclassifies wind and solar as “agricultural use,” opening farmland to massive commercial development.
- 12 of 13 towns want local control, but the county board is ignoring them.
- Wisconsin will lose 500,000+ acres of farmland by 2040 — even before counting solar projects.
- These projects are backed by out-of-state special interests, not local farmers.
- According to Reuters, commercial scale renewable projects “risk damaging some of America’s richest soils in key farming states.”
